On January 15, 1929 American pastor, activist, and Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Junior was born in Atlanta, Georgia.
In 1983 legislation was signed to mark Dr. King's birthday as a federal holiday. And later, in 1994 Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal holiday as a national day of service. The MLK Day of Service is on the third Monday in January each year and is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service.
Today, Dr. King would have been 85 years old. He was shot and killed in Memphis Tennessee on April 4, 1968.
